Demba Sarr
Studio Baye #18
Description
A photographer from Matam, in the Senegal River valley, Demba Sarr spent his life capturing his hometown. From the early 1970s onward, he took all of his photographs in Matam. Some of his negatives nearly vanished: they were found buried under rubble during the renovation of his house. His archive is now preserved and digitized by Lost Memory Archive, an initiative founded by Cheikh Tidiane Mbaye and Adelina Sasnauskaite to restore the work of local Senegalese photographers. His images offer a rare record of life in a town in northern Senegal in the 1970s.
